“Céad míle fáilte!” (A hundred thousand times welcome!)
Ireland, with its 5 million citizens, is one of the smaller countries of the European Union. However, the Emerald Isle welcomes thousands of business visitors every year and boasts a very active conference market.
Conference venues
The main conference cities in Ireland are Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Galway and Limerick.
Dublin Castle Conference Centre has 13 fixed interpreting booths (9 in the Main Hall and 5 in St George’s Hall).
The conference centres of the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions and the European Food and Veterinary Office (see below) also offer permanent interpreting facilities with 9 and 13 fixed booths respectively.
Many other conferences are organised in hotels. Mobile interpreting booths can be installed in most hotel conference rooms.
International Organisations
Ireland is host to two European Union Organisations:
European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, Loughlinstown, County Dublin (South of Dublin)
European Food and Veterinary Office (FVO), Grange, County Meath (West of Dublin)
Languages
Currently the languages most often used in conferences in Ireland are English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Arabic and Irish (Gaelic).
EU 2004
Between January and June 2004 Ireland hosted the Presidency of the European Union.
During this period over 100 multilingual conferences were organised all over the country. The number of languages used varied from 2 to 17. The number of interpreting days linked to EU 2004 reached 1800.
All modes of interpretation were used: simultaneous, consecutive and whispering.
