Welcome to uk-ireland.aiic.net, the website for the UK and Ireland Region of AIIC
The International Association of Conference Interpreters (aiic) was founded in 1953. It includes more than 2600 members worldwide, in 91 countries and 22 AIIC Regions.
There are over 120 AIIC members in the UK and Ireland. They work with a wide range of languages (such as Arabic, Danish, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Maltese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Spanish and Swedish) and can offer other languages through the worldwide AIIC network.
Most AIIC members in the UK and Ireland tend to be domiciled in the larger cities, London, Dublin, Edinburgh, but travel extensively. They all work on a free-lance basis.
They, together with all their colleagues elsewhere in the world, abide by Professional Standards and a Code of Professional Ethics involving strictest confidentiality.
Our members also support and contribute to the main objectives of aiic:
- defining the profession and improving its visibility
- representing AIIC in collective agreements negotiated with international organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union
- improving the practice of conference interpretation through training and research (e.g. the Work Load Study), and developing the profession by assessing the impact of new technologies such as video-conferencing
- consulting with users
AIIC interpreters work for all major international organizations such as the UN, EU and the Council of Europe.
They also work for government departments up to the highest level (ministerial meetings and summits).
In the private sector, they work in a whole range of different meetings in areas such as IT, finance, business, television, sports, medicine, law, agriculture, trade unions, professional bodies, European Works Councils and many more. They also cover smaller meetings and seminars.
